Why are smart phones called “phones?”

This morning on the way to my office I counted the number of people walking on the streets with their phones in their grasp for all the world to see.

They WERE staring, swiping and fingertip-poking their phones.  Guess what they weren’t doing?  That’s right. No one was actually talking on the phone!
